Barbie Xu overcomes water phobia

TAIPEI: Taiwanese actress Barbie Xu was made to strip down to a tiny tube top and overcome aqua phobia while filming upcoming romantic film "Hot Summer Days".

Xu, who already had to shed her beloved shoulder length tresses for the movie, was required to put on a skimpy singlet and shorts during a scene where she jumps into the sea at Hong Kong's Repulse Bay. She then had to remove her singlet leaving her in a tiny tube top with her back and belly exposed.

"It was so scary, that was the day I wore the least clothes during the entire production," the 33-year-old said. "When we were shooting in the morning, a lot of tourists already noticed and the paparazzi arrived in the afternoon. I did not dare to come out a whole 20 minutes after I had changed into the clothes, because there were so many people and cameras pointed at me. I kept thinking of ways to avoid exposing myself because the paparazzi were out to take pictures of that! However, the director said it was getting dark so I had no choice but to come out ".

The scene was also challenging for her as it required her to overcome her fear of water and jump into the sea. She began to have a fear of water when she almost drowned in a swimming pool at the age of 16. "I did not warm up and it was a cold day so I had a leg cramp and started sinking. My friends thought I was joking and did not save me," she recounted. "It was a terrifying experience." She said she only became fine with the scene when the director assured her that they were only shooting her leaping into the sea, while the underwater scenes will be shot at a safe location. "After shooting that scene, I am now not as afraid of water as before," she said, adding that she plans to bring younger sister Dee Hsu for a swim at the pool during the summer.

Xu, best known for her role as Shancai in the hit Taiwanese idol drama "Meteor Garden", plays a terminally-ill, tattoo-loving, motorcycle-riding tomboy that sets out to help other people fulfill their dreams in the upcoming romance movie. It is slated to hit the big screen on February 25.

MYMP introduces new vocalist

Juris (top) and Juliet

MYMP band has found a new replacement for vocalist Juris Fernandez who left the group last October for a solo career. The new vocalist is Juliet Bahala, 18 years old from Davao. Juliet was officially introduced to the public as the new vocalist just in time for their pre-Valentine’s Day Concert at the Music Museum titled “MYMP Now” on February 12.

Chin Alcantara, MYMP guitarist and founder, said he was impressed by Juliet's demo tapes and she is a welcome addition to the group. It was October last year when Juris Fernandez left the band for creative and personal reasons and pursued her solo singing career. Fernandez signed a contract with Star Records after leaving MYMP. The group, when Fernandez was still around, was able to do six albums and later on was chosen as the 1st PMPC Star Awards Best Duo/Group Artist of the Year for Music.

Though with new vocalist, Alcantara cleared that the group will not shift from acoustic music to a new genre. He said they will just explore the vocal range of Juliet so that they will know more the path to follow on.

The band is hoping that their fans will continue to show their support even with a new vocalist.

I'll be really honest: MYMP will never be the same without angelic-voice Juris, but I will surely be looking forward to what Juliet has in store for us. Best of luck, guys! You indeed have to make your mamas proud this time around!

Malaysian actress Carmen Soo still adjusting in Philippine Showbiz

"It's still something like a culture shock, so I'm not used to it yet."

Malaysian actress Carmen Soo made a short visit to the Philippines for the launch of her new product endorsement, Clinelle, held last Saturday at THE BLOCK in SM North Edsa, Quezon City.

After the hosting and dating games hosted by Clinelle, Carmen proceeded to the autograph signing for her fans. Until now, she is still amazed that many Filipinos still recognize her despite her long absence from Philippine television. Her last show was a teleserye Kahit Isang Saglit (2008) in which she was paired with (my idol) Jericho Rosales.

About the attention she's been getting from Filipinos:
" Honestly, i haven't gotten used to it. "

How celebrity life differs in the Philippines and Malaysia:
" I don't know if you know Malaysia, it's quiet different. I'm free in Malaysia, everyone is more relaxed. Here, they're very passionate about the shows being shown and and the actors themselves. It's kinda weird being in a foreign country and and being recognized and they wanna take take photos and there are a lot of fans. They are really, really showing undying support. I'm really thankful."

Meeting her Pinoy friends:
" Every time I come, I call everyone I know, meeting all my friends. I feel so busy - breakfast, lunch, merienda (snacks) and even dinner - meeting everyone. "

Next project in the country:
" ABS-CBN has a project lined up for me... I think I can only say that it will be very, very soon. "

Then she reveals:"I'm spending more time in the Philippines this year."

Good luck to you, Carmen!
And yes, we Filipinos are really like that to celebrities.

Confessions from Rainie Yang

It's hard to believe that the cute, sweet-looking Rainie Yang whose onscreen roles have always been understanding and will bravely go all out for love, has previously been called 'cold-blooded' by a boyfriend. In most of the relationships she has been in, Rainie was the one who wanted to break up first.

Even though she admits 'dumping people more than being dumped', Rainie feels that 'dumping' isn't the right word, "In many circumstances, it's because you know for sure that [the relationship] isn't right or you realise you don't actually love that person so much. Furthermore, I have a strong sense of dignity, so as soon as I feel that something's not right, I'd rather give up. Actually, sometimes breaking up is a good thing for the other person; better to end the pain faster than prolong it."

It has been Rainie's real life that has trained her to be rational and decisive. At the time, in order to help her family repay their debts, from the age of 13 Rainie would constantly enter talent competitions and she'd seen all their cold and warm expressions, "When I was young, up until I bought my first house 5 years ago, I had moved house 10 times. I was constantly kicked out by landlords and so what I could keep by my side, are all my most valuable possessions."

Thus she learnt not to be sentimentally attached [to people] and not to pursue romantic love. She would rather spend more time with family and friends because she knows that if one day, she were to lose everything, the power of love from family and friends would be enough to support and encourage her to get back up. This year, Valentine's Day coincides with Lunar New Year's Day and in Rainie's eyes, gathering together with family on New Year's, is most important. However, when she came to do the photoshoot and saw the diamond necklaces, earrings, rings and bracelets Tiffany had prepared for Valentine's Day, the currently-single Rainie also felt the Valentine's Day spirit, happily saying that wearing these jewelry piece made her very eye-catching.

Just entering the year 2010, Rainie's acting career has put forward dazzling results with "Hi My Sweetheart"s ratings breaking 5% while her new album "Rainie & Love....?" which uses the weather to portray love, has made it on all the big music charts. Furthermore, the Japanese version of "Ai Mei" is entering the Japanese market.

Last year, Rainie wasn't nominated for a Golden Bell award, becoming the most unrecognised talent. She admits, she is full of anticipation for this year's Golden Bells awards, "I really put all my emotions into filming dramas and even though I know it's all to do with fate, deep down I'd still really like to get the award. It's a pity CTS rushed the broadcasting of 'Hi My Sweetheart'; Rainie implied her dissatisfaction, saying, "At the time we had to air as soon as possible, now we have to finish as soon as possible. Besides saying we
can only accept it, what else can we do?"
